Households in Mumbai will have to spend more on fresh milk from September 1, 2026, as city milk producers have decided to increase tabela milk prices by Rs 9 per litre.
Following the latest revision, tabela milk that currently costs Rs 93 per litre will be sold for Rs 102 per litre from September 1. The sharp increase comes just ahead of the festive season, when demand for milk and other dairy products generally remains strong.
The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has cited rising input costs as the primary reason behind the price increase. According to producers, the cost of purchasing and maintaining dairy animals has increased, while expenses on cattle feed and fodder have also gone up.
These higher operating costs have put pressure on milk producers, prompting them to pass on part of the additional expense to consumers through the latest price revision.
The Rs 9-per-litre increase could have a noticeable impact on household budgets, particularly for families that purchase fresh tabela milk every day. At Rs 102 per litre, consumers buying one litre of milk daily could end up spending around Rs 270 more every month compared with the existing price.
The timing of the increase is also significant as the festive season typically leads to higher consumption of milk, sweets and other dairy products. Higher milk prices could therefore also affect the cost of dairy-based products if businesses face increased procurement expenses.
Tabela milk is fresh milk supplied by local dairy farms and cattle sheds and has a significant consumer base in Mumbai.
With the revised rate taking effect from September 1, consumers in the city will now have to pay more than Rs 100 for a litre of tabela milk, adding another essential household item to the list of rising daily expenses.
