Localisation And Exports Drive Growth
New Delhi, September 4, 2026: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called on India’s automotive industry to deepen localisation, invest in technology and research, expand exports and prepare to serve global markets.
Addressing the 66th SIAM Annual Convention, Goyal said the automotive sector would be one of the major drivers of India’s future economic growth.
He urged Indian companies to think beyond the domestic market and take advantage of economies of scale to serve international markets.
Goyal said manufacturers should ensure that vehicles and products made in India meet global quality standards and should not offer lower-quality products for the domestic market.
He highlighted India’s expanding trade partnerships and said the country had finalised nine trade agreements during the past four and a half years.
The minister also pointed to opportunities arising from India’s trade agreements with major economies and encouraged the automotive industry to prepare for increased global competition.
Goyal said artificial intelligence could improve efficiency, competitiveness and customer service while creating new job opportunities.
He also stressed that sustainability should include both environmental and economic considerations and called for deeper localisation across the automotive manufacturing ecosystem.
