Highlights

  • Petrol up by 87 paise, diesel by 91 Paise fuel
  • Prices increased three times in 10 days
  • Petrol in Delhi nears ₹100 per litre
  • Mumbai petrol crosses ₹108 per litre
  • CNG prices also increased in Delhi

  • Rising fuel costs may increase food and transport expenses
  • Middle-class households and small businesses likely to face pressure.

Middle East tensions are no longer just global headlines — they are now hitting India’s roads, kitchens and monthly budgets.

For millions of Indians, every visit to the fuel station is becoming more painful. Petrol prices jumped by 87 paise per litre on Saturday, diesel rose by 91 paise, while CNG rates in Delhi also increased by ₹1 per kg. The latest hike marks the third fuel price increase in just 10 days, pushing fuel costs up by nearly ₹5 per litre since May 15.

In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹99.51 per litre, dangerously close to the psychological ₹100 mark. In Mumbai, rates have already crossed ₹108 per litre, adding pressure on commuters, cab drivers and delivery workers.

But the impact of rising fuel prices goes far beyond vehicles.

From Fuel Tank to Kitchen Shelf

When petrol and diesel become expensive, transportation costs rise across the country. Trucks carrying vegetables, milk, medicines and groceries spend more on fuel, and businesses eventually pass that burden to consumers. This means higher food bills, costlier online deliveries and increased prices for everyday essentials.

For middle-class families already balancing school fees, rent, EMIs and electricity bills, the fresh hike comes as another blow to household savings.

Why Are Fuel Prices Rising?

The latest increase is linked to rising global crude oil prices triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Concerns over oil supply disruptions and instability around key shipping routes have pushed international energy markets higher.Indian oil companies say they are increasing prices gradually instead of imposing a sudden sharp hike. However, consumers are beginning to feel the cumulative impact.

CNG No Longer the “Cheap Alternative”?

The rise in CNG prices is particularly worrying for auto-rickshaw drivers and urban commuters who shifted to cleaner fuel to save money. With CNG crossing ₹81 per kg in Delhi, many now fear that affordable transportation options are shrinking.

Government Walking a Tightrope

Government sources argue that taxes on fuel were reduced earlier this year to protect consumers from global shocks. Officials also claim that during earlier crude oil spikes, oil companies and the government absorbed major losses to avoid burdening citizens immediately.Still, experts warn that if global crude oil prices remain high, inflation could rise further in the coming months. The Bigger Consumer ConcernThe real fear is not just expensive petrol — it is the chain reaction. Higher fuel prices can influence food inflation, transportation charges, travel costs and even small business profits. For ordinary Indians, global conflicts may feel far away. Yet every rise at the fuel pump proves how international crises can quietly reshape daily life at home.
