Mumbai: Jio Platforms Limited has achieved a major milestone in global innovation by entering the Top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings, becoming the only Indian technology company to secure a place among the world’s leading patent filers.
According to the latest WIPO rankings, Jio Platforms climbed an impressive 320 positions to reach 20th place globally in 2025, marking one of the biggest jumps among technology companies worldwide.
The achievement places Jio alongside major global technology leaders such as Huawei, Samsung Electronics, Qualcomm, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple, and Microsoft in the global innovation ecosystem.
Jio’s patent filings are concentrated in next-generation technologies, including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing, and digital services infrastructure.
Commenting on the achievement, Akash M. Ambani said that Jio’s entry into WIPO’s Global Top 20 reflects years of investment and effort toward becoming a deep-tech company. He described the ranking as evidence of the company’s growing innovation capabilities and technological leadership.
Ambani dedicated the achievement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, stating that the goal is to transform India from a consumer of technology into a creator, owner, and exporter of advanced technologies.
The milestone is particularly notable because global PCT patent filings grew by less than one percent during the period, making Jio’s 320-position leap even more significant.
As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms had filed 6,817 patents, including 2,393 filings in India and 4,424 filings in international markets. The company has also secured 1,009 granted patents worldwide, with 538 granted in India and 471 granted internationally.
Jio said its innovation strategy is built around technologies that have been developed and commercialized at scale. The company is currently investing in future-focused areas such as 5G/6G radio technologies, 5G/6G core networks, satellite communications, and Agentic AI platforms, including JioBrain.
Industry observers view the achievement as a significant milestone for India’s technology sector, highlighting the country’s growing role in developing original technologies and intellectual property for global markets.
