India’s automobile industry recorded its strongest-ever May performance, with passenger vehicle sales reaching a record high and robust growth reported across two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 27.3 per cent year-on-year to 4,38,854 units in May 2026, marking the highest-ever sales for the month. Industry experts attributed the growth to improved consumer confidence, easier financing conditions, and continued demand for utility vehicles.
Utility vehicles remained the primary growth engine for the sector, with sales increasing 24.8 per cent to around 2.46 lakh units. Passenger car sales registered a sharp rise of 28.8 per cent, while van sales grew 7.4 per cent during the month.
The two-wheeler segment also posted strong numbers, with sales rising 14.8 per cent to 19.02 lakh units. Industry officials said higher rural demand, improved availability of finance, and strong scooter sales contributed to the growth. The segment continues to benefit from rising mobility needs and improving economic conditions in both urban and rural markets.
Three-wheeler sales recorded the highest percentage growth among all major categories, jumping 31.1 per cent to 70,720 units. The increase was driven by strong demand for passenger carriers and goods transport vehicles, reflecting improving economic activity and last-mile connectivity requirements.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said all three major segments achieved their highest-ever May sales. He noted that a lower base effect from the previous year, supportive government policies, and favourable financing conditions helped boost vehicle purchases.
Industry observers said the sustained demand for personal mobility, rising consumer spending, and a stable economic environment have supported the sector’s growth momentum. The increasing popularity of utility vehicles and premium offerings has also contributed to higher sales volumes.
Automobile manufacturers remain optimistic about demand prospects for the rest of the year, particularly with expectations of a favourable monsoon season and continued infrastructure spending. Analysts believe the sector is well-positioned to maintain growth, provided inflation remains under control and financing costs stay supportive.
The record May performance highlights the resilience of India’s automobile market and reinforces its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle markets.
