New Delhi, June 24: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has strengthened its contribution to India’s defense sector by supplying the entire 5,700 tonnes of special steel required for three newly commissioned Indian Navy vessels—INS Dunagiri, INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak. The warships were formally inducted into the Navy during a commissioning ceremony held at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata on June 21.
The steel supplied by SAIL included specialized DMR 249A grade hot-rolled sheets and plates designed for defense applications. These high-strength steel products were manufactured at the company’s Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela steel plants, highlighting SAIL’s capability to support critical naval and defense infrastructure projects with indigenous technology.
SAIL said it has significantly enhanced its production capacity for defense-grade steel, particularly at the Special Plate Plant in Rourkela, to meet the growing requirements of India’s armed forces. The company has already supplied specialized steel for several key defense projects, including the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and Project 17A stealth frigates.
Speaking on the achievement, SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda said the company remains committed to strengthening India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The successful commissioning of the three naval vessels is expected to further boost India’s maritime capabilities while reinforcing the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
