Singh is expected to join OpenAI in September 2026 and will report to Kiran Mani, the company’s Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region.
He will become OpenAI’s most senior executive in India and will be responsible for the company’s overall performance across consumer growth, business operations, enterprise adoption, regulatory engagement and strategic partnerships.
His appointment comes as the use of generative artificial intelligence continues to expand among Indian consumers, startups, enterprises, educational institutions and government organisations.
Who Is Prabhjeet Singh?
Prabhjeet Singh is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
He began his professional career in 2005 with Lehman Brothers in London, where he worked as a senior analyst across structured finance and equities programme-trading teams.
In 2006, Singh joined global consulting firm McKinsey & Company. During his nearly decade-long tenure at the organisation, he worked with more than 30 private- and public-sector clients and chief executives.
His work primarily covered financial services, consumer technology and telecommunications across India and Southeast Asia.
He also advised organisations developing digital models in banking, payments and financial inclusion, including digital banks and new financial-distribution platforms.

Singh joined Uber in August 2015 as General Manager and Head of Strategy.
During his tenure, he held several leadership positions, including General Manager for Delhi and North India, Head of North, East and West India and Bangladesh, and Head of Cities and Growth.
In 2020, he was appointed President of Uber India and South Asia.
In that role, Singh led the ride-hailing company’s mobility operations across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He also played a major role in scaling services designed for Indian customers, including auto-rickshaw rides, motorcycle taxis and bus-based mobility offerings.
His experience in expanding a global technology platform across India’s diverse markets is expected to support OpenAI’s growth plans in the country.

His responsibilities are expected to include:
- Expanding the adoption of OpenAI’s products among consumers and businesses

India an Important AI Market
India has emerged as a major market for consumer AI products due to its large internet population, expanding developer community and rapidly digitising business ecosystem.
Indian startups and enterprises are increasingly using generative AI for customer support, software development, education, financial services, healthcare and content creation.
OpenAI’s appointment of a dedicated India Managing Director indicates that the company is seeking deeper engagement with Indian customers, policymakers, developers and enterprise partners.
Singh’s regulatory experience will also be important as India develops policies governing artificial intelligence, data protection, online safety and responsible technology deployment.
Recognised Business Leader
Singh received the IIM Ahmedabad Young Alumni Achievers Award in 2023.
He has also been included in The Economic Times’ “40 Under Forty” list, which recognises emerging entrepreneurs, business executives and corporate leaders in India.
His extensive experience across consulting, finance and technology is expected to help OpenAI navigate the opportunities and regulatory complexities of the Indian market.
The appointment represents an important step in OpenAI’s efforts to build a stronger local presence and make its technology accessible to more Indian consumers, enterprises, developers and institutions.
