New Delhi, June 28: Investors facing an emergency cash requirement can consider borrowing against their Public Provident Fund (PPF) account instead of opting for high-cost personal loans. The PPF loan facility offers lower interest rates and simpler processing, making it an affordable financing option for eligible account holders.
However, the loan facility is not available immediately after opening a PPF account. Under the scheme’s rules, an investor can apply for a loan only from the third financial year until the end of the sixth financial year after the account is opened. Loans cannot be availed before or after this eligibility window.
The loan amount is not calculated on the current balance. Instead, it is determined based on the balance available at the end of the second financial year preceding the year of application. Investors can borrow up to 25% of that eligible balance, which means the sanctioned amount may be lower than the current account value.
One of the biggest advantages of a PPF loan is its relatively low borrowing cost. The current interest rate is 8.10%, making it significantly cheaper than most personal loans and credit card borrowing. Since the loan is secured against the investor’s own savings, the approval process is generally quicker and involves fewer formalities.
The repayment period is also clearly defined. Borrowers must repay the principal amount within 36 months from the first day of the month following the month in which the loan is sanctioned. After the principal is repaid, the applicable interest must also be cleared. Delayed repayment may attract additional interest charges.
Investors should also note that a second loan against the same PPF account can be availed only after the earlier loan has been repaid in full. Financial experts recommend using the PPF loan facility only for genuine emergencies, as it allows investors to meet short-term financial needs without disrupting their long-term savings and investment goals.
