New Delhi: E-way bill generation under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime increased 7.7% year-on-year to 139.1 million in August 2026, signalling continued strength in goods movement and formal economic activity across India.
The August tally was the third-highest monthly e-way bill generation on record. It was 9.95 million higher than the 129.13 million e-way bills generated in August 2025. However, compared with the previous month, e-way bill generation declined marginally by 0.51% from 139.79 million in July.
March 2026 remains the record month with 140.60 million e-way bills, followed by July at 139.79 million. Despite the slight month-on-month decline in August, the latest data indicates that the movement of goods and formal business activity remain resilient.
An e-way bill is an electronic document required under the GST system for the movement of goods valued at more than ₹50,000, subject to specified conditions and exemptions. E-way bill generation is closely tracked as a high-frequency indicator of economic activity, consumption and domestic trade.
Tax experts said the sustained rise points towards underlying strength in India’s organised economy. Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner at EY India, attributed the trend to improved compliance, increasing formalisation of business activity and steady consumption demand across sectors.
The numbers also come ahead of the festive season, when consumer spending and business activity generally pick up. Higher e-way bill generation could therefore support GST revenues in the coming months.
India’s gross GST revenue had already risen 14.8% year-on-year to ₹1,99,853 crore in August 2026, compared with ₹1,74,116 crore in the same month last year.
The latest e-way bill numbers, combined with strong GST receipts, suggest that domestic trade and consumption continue to provide support to economic activity.
