Electric vehicle retail sales in India rose 52.9% year-on-year to 2,98,448 units in August 2026, lifting overall EV penetration to 12.3% from 9.5% a year earlier.
Electric vehicle retail sales in India reached 2,98,448 units in August 2026, marking a 52.9% increase from the same month last year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.
The growth pushed overall EV penetration to 12.3% during the month, compared with 9.5% in August 2025, reflecting stronger adoption across all major vehicle categories.
Electric two-wheelers led the expansion, with retail sales rising 67.05% year-on-year to 1,83,204 units from 1,09,673 units a year earlier. The segment continued to account for more than 60% of total EV retail sales.
Electric passenger vehicle sales increased to 30,696 units in August from 20,210 units in the year-ago period, translating into growth of about 52%. The segment reached a 7.6% share of overall passenger vehicle sales during the month.
The electric three-wheeler segment also maintained strong momentum, with sales increasing 25.28% to 79,846 units from 63,736 units in August 2025. EV penetration in the category stood at 65.3%, making three-wheelers one of the most electrified segments in the Indian automobile market.
Electric commercial vehicle sales recorded the sharpest proportional increase, nearly tripling to 4,702 units from 1,631 units a year earlier. August also marked the highest-ever monthly retail volume for electric commercial vehicles.
FADA President Sai Giridhar said August 2026 was the strongest August on record for electric mobility in India, with all four major EV categories posting fresh highs for the month.
He noted that electric two-wheelers maintained penetration above 10% despite August being a relatively soft, non-festive month, indicating sustained demand beyond seasonal buying periods.
The broad-based growth across two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles highlights the expanding role of electric mobility in India’s automobile market.
With penetration rising across categories and commercial vehicle adoption accelerating, the latest data indicates that EV demand is becoming more diversified rather than being concentrated in only a few segments.
