New Delhi: Mother Dairy has launched India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, marking a significant step toward sustainable packaging in the dairy industry. The innovative pouch is designed to naturally break down in soil over time, eventually transforming into a bioavailable wax, reducing long-term environmental impact.
The new packaging will initially be introduced for Mother Dairy’s cow milk variant in Delhi-NCR from June 5, a segment that accounts for nearly 35% of the company’s regional milk sales.
Speaking at the launch, Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Mother Dairy, said the company has focused on creating an environmentally friendly solution without increasing costs for consumers. He noted that the packaging degrades within a few years instead of taking centuries like conventional plastic-based pouches.
The launch comes at a time when Mother Dairy is witnessing strong demand, with summer sales growing by more than 30% year-on-year. The company also clarified that despite a recent ₹2 per litre milk price increase, it currently has no plans for further price hikes.
Mother Dairy emphasized that pouch packaging remains one of the most cost-effective and efficient methods for milk distribution in India, making sustainability-focused innovation within the existing ecosystem crucial for the sector’s future growth.
