Mumbai: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched ‘OneTag’, a new portability solution designed to make it easier for NETC FASTag users to switch their issuer bank without replacing the physical FASTag already installed on their vehicle.
The initiative was launched at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai. OneTag has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Currently, customers who want to change the bank that issued their FASTag generally have to close the existing tag and complete a fresh onboarding process to obtain another physical FASTag. OneTag is designed to remove this requirement.
Under the new system, customers will be able to select another issuer bank while continuing to use the FASTag already affixed to their vehicle. Once the portability process is completed successfully, both the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number will remain unchanged.
The facility will be offered through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app. Users will be guided through eligibility checks, secure verification, consent, selection of their preferred issuer bank and the subsequent onboarding process.
The existing issuer bank will be responsible for customer verification and handling the previous wallet, refunds and pending transactions. The newly selected bank will complete onboarding and provide FASTag-related services after portability is completed.
NPCI will provide the central technology framework for the service and update issuer information in the NETC system. Toll plazas and acquiring entities will continue processing FASTag transactions through the existing infrastructure.
OneTag is also expected to reduce the need to manufacture and dispatch replacement FASTags, potentially lowering operational and reissuance costs while improving the overall customer experience.
FASTag penetration in India has crossed 98%, according to the announcement. Around 13 crore NETC FASTags have been issued, of which approximately 6 crore are active. The government expects OneTag to further improve interoperability and give highway users greater flexibility in choosing their FASTag service provider.
