Carlsen, Giri Power Convincing Victory
Alpine APL Pipers strengthened their position at the top of the Global Chess League standings with an emphatic 11-6 victory over Cheq Mumba Masters in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Magnus Carlsen led the Pipers’ charge with a convincing victory over French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on the icon board. The Norwegian world number one secured his second individual win of the competition with a composed performance.
Anish Giri produced another standout performance, defeating young Indian Grandmaster M. Pranesh in a tactical encounter. His victory proved to be one of the defining moments of the tie and contributed to the Pipers’ dominant team result.
The victory took Alpine APL Pipers to 12 match points and 58 game points. They remain level on match points with Fyers American Gambits and Ganges Grandmasters.
Fyers American Gambits occupy the provisional top position because of their superior game-point tally of 60, following an 8-5 victory over Triveni Continental Kings. Ganges Grandmasters have 55 game points.
Wednesday was particularly difficult for two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings, who suffered two consecutive defeats. They were first beaten 15-3 by Ganges Grandmasters before losing again to American Gambits, leaving them at the bottom of the standings.
PBG Alaskan Knights also defeated Cheq Mumba Masters 11-6, leaving both teams on nine match points.
