New Delhi, August 12: The Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) has announced the formation of a national committee aimed at promoting growth, innovation and trade opportunities in India’s rapidly expanding pet food industry.
Pet food includes prepared food, treats and nutrition products primarily intended for companion animals such as dogs and cats and sold through retail channels.
India’s pet food market is witnessing rapid growth as urban consumers increasingly shift from home-cooked feeding towards packaged nutrition. According to market estimates cited by TPCI, India’s pet food market is valued at USD 0.98 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 1.68 billion by 2031.
Globally, the pet food market is estimated at USD 226.31 billion in 2026 and is expected to reach USD 324.17 billion by 2031.
India remains a net importer of pet food, particularly in premium, therapeutic, wet, specialised and imported-brand segments. TPCI said the country’s key trade challenge is to leverage its domestic processing capabilities and availability of ingredients to develop export-grade products that are certified, consistent and capable of building strong brands.
Mohit Singla, Chairman, TPCI, said India’s pet industry is undergoing significant transformation, driven by changing consumer lifestyles, rising pet ownership and increasing focus on pet health and wellness.
The newly formed National Pet Industry Committee of India will bring together stakeholders from across the sector on a collaborative platform. TPCI said the initiative will focus on structured dialogue, policy opportunities, trade development and building a sustainable and future-ready framework for the industry.
The committee includes Nitin Jain, Chief Operating Officer, Godrej Pet Care; Abhishek Agarwal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Innomalous Pet Products; Akshay Mahendru, Founder, Nootie by PETPOINT; and Makarand Chavan, General Secretary, Vet Association (FSAPAI).
With domestic demand increasing and the global market continuing to expand, the committee is expected to play a role in strengthening India’s position in the international pet food trade.
